Google is here with tech advancements for users. Recently, it has brought up an exciting update in its DeepMind division, a new large language model called Gemini Robotics On-Device. The standout point is that it works locally on robotic devices, meaning without an internet connection. This is one of the significant shifts from the AI models that were majorly dependent on cloud connectivity. It’s designed to combine speech, language, and action VLA processing with bi-arm robots, in order to carry out complex tasks.
The main aim of Google is to make robotics more helpful in offline environments like secure facilities, remote locations, and latency-sensitive scenarios by allowing robots to evaluate data and make choices on the device itself.
Senior Director and Head of Robotics at Google DeepMind came up with this model, focusing on its low-latency performance and flexibility.
Here’s How the Model Works?
The Gemini Robotics On-Device model works on controlling robots' movements. Further, it can also understand and respond to the prompts you ask. As stated by Google, this model is ideal for latency-sensitive apps.
While stating Verge, Carolina Parada stated, “This model is small and efficient to run directly on any robot. Think of it as a beginner model or ideal for places where connectivity is low.”
Speaking about performing tasks, it can learn new tasks with as little as 50 to 100 demonstrations. The model was trained using Google’s single-arm ALOHO robot. However, it works great on other platforms like Franka FR3 (a bi-arm) and Apptronik's Apollo humanoid robot.
The Gemini Robotics On-Device model was specifically designed for dual-arm robots and is optimized to run with limited computational resources while completing challenging, dexterous tasks like folding laundry or unzipping bags.
This On-Device Gemini Robotics model along with its SDK is up for trusted testers and programmers. Moreover, it’s working towards reducing the security risks associated with the same. Google has now shifted its gear towards the robotic division, while the competition is at the next level in the tech industry!
