Google has introduced a major upgrade to AI Mode in Search by allowing users to connect supported third-party apps directly to the experience. The new capability enables AI Mode to interact with services such as YouTube Music, Instacart, and Canva, making it possible to complete tasks without leaving Google Search. Currently available for US users only; the upgrade unlocks secure interaction and connectivity of apps in AI mode.
As stated by Google on July 16, 2026, “You’ll be able to securely link and interact with your go-to services directly in AI Mode.”
The announcement comes following Google’s continuous efforts to expand AI Mode. The steps already support Personal Intelligence through Google services like Gmail and Google Photos. The update reflects Google’s broader effort to transform Search from an information tool into an AI-powered assistant that can take action on a user’s behalf.
AI Mode Does More Than Just Answering Questions
Google’s latest update moves AI Mode from simply generating responses to helping users complete real-world tasks. With connected apps, users can now securely link selected third-party services, allowing AI Mode to understand requests, access relevant information with permission, and transfer actions directly to those applications.
The enhancement lets you connect your apps with Search, so if someone is planning a birthday party, they can ask AI Mode to create a playlist in YouTube Music based on the guest’s age and music preferences. The AI tool will accordingly suggest songs, generate a playlist title, and prepare the playlist, which users can review and save.
On another occasion, if someone needs to create a birthday invitation banner, they can simply ask AI Mode to provide suggestions in Canva. The tool then generates banner suggestions tailored to your needs. So, whether you are creating a grocery list or looking to purchase some items on Instacart, connected apps with AI Mode can assist you with diverse tasks.
Privacy and User Control Remain Central
Google highlighted that connected apps operate on an opt-in basis. Users must explicitly link supported services before AI Mode can interact with them. Users remain in control of which apps they connect to and can disconnect them at any time.
As Google notes, AI Mode only accesses the information necessary to complete the requested tasks and clearly indicates when it is using connected apps. These controls aim at providing transparency and allowing users to benefit from personalized AI assistance.
Currently, Google supports integrations with YouTube Music, Instacart, and Canva when you connect your apps with Search. However, there are plans to add more services over time. With the upgrade, Google is on a mission to make Search more useful by reducing the need to switch between apps when completing everyday tasks.
