Chrome M156 Update

Chrome M156 Rolls Out to Googlebook with 14 New Stability and Usability Updates

Google has started rolling out the Chrome M156 update for Googlebook on October 26, 2026, with 14 new improvements aimed at enhancing browser stability, everyday tasks, and the overall user experience. One key feature is Hover Tooltips in the AI Mode Menu, where items in the address bar’s AI Mode menu show tooltips on hover.

Simple Shortcuts and Address Bar Upgrades

Chrome M156 Rolls Out to Googlebook With 14 Stability and Usability Upgrades

  • Alt+Tab: It lets you switch windows on Fullscreen sites and applications when keyboard lock is enabled, as it does on Chrome OS, Mac, and Windows. Users do not need to hold Esc to exit before switching windows.
  • Alt+Shift+Enter: It opens the typed search query in a new background tab while keeping the current page active.
  • Up/Down Arrows in Multi-Line Address Bar text: The address bar handles multiline text more effectively. Up/Down arrows now move the cursor between lines for easier editing; suggestions are also hidden.

Better Performance on Popular Websites

Google has also brought significant updates to websites, including:

  • Google Docs: Allows copying extensive tables, rich text blocks, and embedded images in Google Docs.
  • Stability fixes: Chrome 156 fixes crashes related to password managers such as 1Password, extension uninstallation, and tab management. These changes make browser sessions more reliable, especially for users who rely on password management for daily productivity.
  • Facebook Live Video: Performance improvements of Facebook Live streams.

File management also comes with several enhancements. Chrome 156 now supports a system-level “Save As” dialog that lets users choose a download location and rename files before saving.

Other improvements include fixes for unresponsive third-party sign-in prompts, Facebook Live buffering, and incorrect website icons in the address bar.

What’s New in Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode continues with the following updates:

  • AI Mode Animation Timing: It waits for the menu to finish expanding.
  • Add to your search: The menu lets you add tabs and files to an AI Mode.
  • View your AI Mode history: It displays a hint text saying "Ask anything” and a blinking cursor.

Google is also developing additional features like multiple-profile support, tab group synchronization across windows and devices, and improved Google Cast device discovery.
