Claude users on August 24, 2026, reported problems accessing Anthropic’s AI models, including Claude Chat, Claude Code, the API, and Cowork. The company confirmed the major Claude outage on its service status page, saying, “We are investigating elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. We will provide an update as soon as possible.” The company later acknowledged the outage and resolved the issue across models and platforms.
What Issues Did Users Face During the Claude Outage?
According to Downdetector reports, there was a sharp rise, with 41% of reported problems involving Claude Code, 31% involving Claude Chat, and 19% related to the company’s app. Users experienced failed requests, login issues, website errors, and increased latency. The incident's widespread nature suggested the problem was not limited to Claude’s main chatbot interface.
Technology commentator Alex Getman posted on X that Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude for Workspaces (also known as Cowork) were experiencing degraded performance. He also said that elevated error rates were affecting several Claude models.
Developers Face API and Claude Code Disruptions
The Claude outage also prompted complaints from Claude Max subscribers, while some users were unable to complete prompts or API requests. Developers reported failures when using Claude’s API, also faced failed requests, and increased latency.
Reports from Claude users in the US, UK, and India showed failed requests and “529 Overloaded” errors, which are caused by server-side capacity or availability issues, not a problem with your device or network.
The disruption was affecting organizations that use Claude for software development, content, and other business processes. Among these, Claude Code was among the hardest-hit parts of the outage, and it can slow down releases. Debugging, automation, and the API could impact apps and agentic systems built around Claude.
Anthropic’s Resolves the Claude Issue
Anthropic later resolved the issue. The company stated, “This issue has been resolved. From 9:50 PM PT /04:50 UTC through 00:36 AM PT/07:36 UTC, users saw elevated errors on requests to Claude models, including Claude Opus 5 and Fable 5."
However, Anthropic did not say whether infrastructure problems, software deployment, or high traffic caused the incident. These sudden service disruptions impact businesses and individuals increasingly relying on AI platforms for their day-to-day operations.
