Googleโ€™s New Android RCS Archival Feature Shares Text Messages with Your Employer

Googleโ€™s latest Android messaging announcement is creatingย worries among theย work employees. The new update lets Google share text messages with your employer, keeping the personal work chats no longer private.

The company is introducing Android RCS Archival feature for Pixel and android phones that lets IT teamsย store and review text conversations on work-managed devices. This feature helps organizations meet compliance requirements whileย maintainingย the high security of Google Messages.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the capability is designed only for work-managed devices and does not affect personal users. There was a buzz online, wherein users believed Googleย shares text messages by default.

However,ย in reality, theย change impacts only devices owned or controlled by employers.ย Personal phones, as said earlier,ย wonโ€™tย be affected and willย benefitย from end-to-end encryption, keeping private chats hidden.ย Theย RCS Archival feature is primarily applicable to regulated industries and adds RCS archiving to the existing SMS archiving.

When Can Employers Read Messages?

To access messages, employers need to meet specific conditions, such as:ย

  • The company should manage the device.ย
  • RCS archival features must be enabled.ย
  • The user should receive a notification confirming monitoring.

People Misunderstanding Encryption

Fear comes from misunderstanding encryption. While encryption secures messages during transmission, they are decrypted once delivered. This means that anyone managing the device can access it. The update depicts the reality of corporate life, in which privacy depends on ownership.

According toย Google, โ€œThe new capability available on Google Pixel and other Android Enterprise devices offer employees all the benefits of RCS like read receipts, typing indicators, and end-to-end encryption between Android devices โ€“ while ensuring your organization meets its regulatory requirements.โ€

The update comes after a growing pattern of workplace monitoring, just as Microsoft Teams' recent tracking feature. The main aim of the Android RCS Archival is to improve regulatory compliance with Google Pixel. In the end, experts recommend keeping personal and work chats separate and verifying whether the device is monitored.
