OpenAI’s services went down, including ChatGPT, Sora, GPT API, and Codex on Wednesday, 16 July 2025. According to Downdetector, more than 8,000 outages were reported across the United States at approximately 7:25 AM. A significant impact has also been observed across Europe and Asia. Although OpenAI has resolved the issue after monitoring and analyzing it, the actual cause remains unknown.
As per the incident reported on social media platforms, users encountered ‘unusual errors’ while accessing the platform and its usage history. Many users faced login loops alongside verification errors while accessing ChatGPT. Errors on Codex and Sora led developers and content creators to pause their work. Furthermore, black screens and API errors also appeared.
As per Downdetector’s coverage, 81% users faced difficulties with ChatGPT, 10% with the website, and 9% with the application.

OpenAI faces a major global outage for the second time within a month. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Sora, and other services have a broad user base. By 8:19 AM, OpenAI updated about the full recovery of the impacted services, including ChatGPT, Sora, and Codex.
