OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-5.6, its newest family of foundation models, with CEO Sam Altman announcing the release publicly on July 9, 2026. In a discussion with CNBC, Altman said the model is ‘54% more token efficient on agentic coding tasks.’ The launch introduces three models, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna, each designed for different performance and pricing needs. The new family delivers stronger reasoning, improved coding, greater efficiency, and lower operating costs.
As stated by OpenAI, “We’re launching the GPT-5.6 family of models for general availability following our limited preview: our new flagship, Sol, alongside Terra, a balanced model for everyday work, and Luna, our most cost-efficient model.”
Altman posted on X,
The release follows weeks of anticipation after GPT-5.6 underwent a limited rollout. As OpenAI asserts, the models are intended to support developers, enterprises, and everyday users through a combination of higher capability and better cost efficiency.
GPT-5.6 Family Includes Three Models
GPT-5.6 brings three models dedicated to playing three distinct roles-
GPT-5.6 Sol is the flagship model. OpenAI positions it for demanding workloads such as software engineering, scientific research, cybersecurity, and complex reasoning. It offers the highest performance across coding and enterprise tasks.
GPT-5.6 Terra is designed as a balanced option. It targets organizations seeking strong reasoning and multimodal capabilities while maintaining lower operating costs than Sol.
GPT-5.6 Luna is the smallest and most affordable model. OpenAI says it is optimized for high-volume applications, customer support, summarization, and lightweight AI workloads requiring fast responses.
What Improvements Does the New GPT Family Bring?
One of the biggest highlights in GPT-5.6 is improved coding efficiency. Speaking to CNBC, Sam Altman said GPT-5.6 Sol is 54% more token efficient on agentic coding tasks than its predecessor. The improvement reduces token consumption while maintaining strong coding performance, helping developers lower inference costs during long software engineering sessions.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 improves reasoning accuracy, reliability, and instruction following. Early testers reported better consistency on complex tasks and fewer failures during extended workflows.
Availability and Pricing
OpenAI has made GPT-5.6 available immediately through the OpenAI API and across its newest enterprise offering, ChatGPT Work. The rollout begins with Pro, Enterprise, and Edu customers, followed by Business and Plus subscribers in the coming days.
The company emphasizes that the three-model approach also provides pricing flexibility. Luna is positioned as the lowest-cost option while Terra offers a balance between performance and cost. Apart from that, Sol delivers maximum capability for premium workloads. OpenAI designed the smaller models to deliver comparable task quality at significantly lower operating costs, with some workloads costing only a fraction of the flagship model.
