OpenAI Releases AgentKit: New Developer Tools for Creating AI Agents

OpenAI unveiled the introduction of AgentKit, a rich set of tools that aims to make and deploy AI agents easier and faster for developers and organizations. This new solution resolves the existing fragmented state of agent development, which tends to involve dealing with numerous, complicated, and ununified tools.

AgentKit delivers an integrated platform with major elements, shifting agent development from weeks of tedious, labor-intensive efforts to a more visual, faster, and more dependable process.

Major Tools in the AgentKit Toolkit

AgentKit adds a number of central building blocks to simplify agentic workflow creation:

    • Agent Builder (Beta): A graphical, drag-and-drop canvas enabling developers to author, configure, and version sophisticated multi-agent workflows. It gives maximum visibility into agent logic, is interactive with preview runs, and comes with integrated version control for seamless iteration. Ramp and LY Corporation are among the companies that have already witnessed spectacular decreases in development time, with one team shifting from a blank canvas to a live agent in a matter of hours.
    • ChatKit (Generally Available): A toolkit to make it easier to deploy conversational, chat-based agent experiences. It supports heavy tasks such as streaming responses and thread management, allowing developers to easily integrate customizable and native-feeling agent UIs into their product or website. Canva found that ChatKit saved them more than two weeks of development time.
    • Connector Registry (Beta Launch): A single administration control panel for businesses to manage and control data and tool connections on all OpenAI products, such as ChatGPT and the API. It unifies data sources such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft Teams, making them more secure and easier to maintain.

Improved Performance and Security

AgentKit is also dedicated to agent dependability and security through enhanced evaluation and fine-tuning functionalities:

1. Advanced Evaluation (Evals)

The platform adds new capabilities for intense performance evaluation, which are critical to creating production-quality agents:

    • Datasets: Tools for quickly designing and growing agent test sets, with built-in grading and human annotation capabilities.
    • Trace Grading: Top-to-bottom testing of sophisticated agentic workflows with automated grading to enable developers to immediately spot and correct flaws.
    • Automated Prompt Optimization: A capability that creates enhanced prompts using human annotation and grader feedback.
    • Third-party Model Support: Enables testing of third-party models within the OpenAI Evals platform for an integrated test environment.

These new testing features have already delivered promising results, with the company Carlyle saving 50% of development time and a 30% boost in agent accuracy on their multi-agent system.

2. Safety and Customization

    • Guardrails: Guardrails, an open-source, modular security layer, can be integrated directly into Agent Builder by developers. Guardrails protects agents from unintended or malicious activities by hiding Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and identifying attempts to jailbreak.
    • Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT): This is currently on OpenAI's o4-mini model and in private beta on GPT-5. The beta adds Custom Tool Calls for improved reasoning and Custom Graders to define use-case-specific evaluation, again driving agent performance.

Availability and Future Plans

ChatKit and the Evalsโ€™ new features are widely available to all developers as of today. Agent Builder is available in beta, and Connector Registry is starting its beta release to API and ChatGPT Enterprise/Edu customers who are qualified. All these tools come with the basic API model pricing.

OpenAI indicated that it already has had a great deal of success in real-world applications, mentioning Klarna, which created a support agent that resolves two-thirds of all customer tickets, and Clay, which implemented a sales agent to have a growth rate 10 times larger.

The firm aims to add a standalone Workflows API and specialized agent deployment features to ChatGPT in the near future. Agents developed using AgentKit will enable more advanced agentic workflows to be available, cost-effective, and reliable across different sectors.
