Meta Platform Instagram announced that end-to-end encrypted messaging in direct messages (DMs) will no longer be supported from May 8, 2026. This stands as a major shift in the company’s privacy approach. End-to-end encryption is a special key used to protect the conversation or calls, which only the recipient can see or listen to, not even Meta in this scenario. However, with this change, this privacy system is dropping. Meta confirmed the update through an official notice on its website.
Instagram shared an important statement, “If you have chats that are affected by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages that you need to keep. Alongside, if you’re using an older version of Instagram, you need to update the app before you can download the chats affected.”
Why is Instagram Removing End-to-End Encryption?
Now, users are advised to back up their data in direct messages before the complete shutdown. Further, those who need E2EE should look for alternatives such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram. According to Meta, the feature is being discontinued due to lower user adoption, meaning fewer users are opting for encrypted chats.
With the new update, the Instagram messages can be reviewed for security, moderation, and more. The main point is that it will help detect harmful content that violates the platforms' regulations, which is definitely a good initiative. Even though there is a change to a specific privacy feature, users can continue to chat, post, call, and communicate through Instagram DMs as always!
