The social media platform, X (formerly, Twitter), faced an outage in the United States on Sunday, 1 February 2026. According to reports, the outage disrupted users’ ability to access their timelines and post updates. The major cities that were impacted include New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
As per Downdetector, users started to report concerns about the X outage at around 11:19 a.m. ET. Over 19,281 users raised complaints regarding the outage. The disruptions lasted for 45 minutes and were eased by 12:04 p.m. ET.
X did not react immediately after users raised complaints, and therefore, the total number of affected accounts on Downdetector may differ from the actual number. However, the services were restored by Sunday afternoon.
Why Was X Down?
X has not released any official statement about the outage yet. Hence, the actual cause is still unknown. Major issues noticed during the outage were a failure to load the timeline on the platform. A set of users also expressed concerns about the inability to load comments.
According to reported complaints, 66% of users encountered difficulties with the X application, 32% faced disruptions on the website, and 3% failed to comment or message across the USA.
It is worth noting that X also experienced a major outage on 16 January 2026. Experts are considering technical glitches as the cause of such disruptions.

While X faced an outage, Musk hints at entering the smartphone industry and launching an AI-first smartphone. The speculations were made after Musk’s response on X to the user remarks on introducing a Starlink smartphone. Musk reacted to the remarks with “Not out of the question at some point...”
