Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet service by SpaceX, experienced one of the most significant and most unexpected global outages, affecting millions of users in 140 countries or territories. The outage lasted for around two and a half hours, beginning around 3 pm EDT (12:30 am IST), during which, according to Down Detector reports, 60,000 issues were reported, with most users stating, “total blackout.”
According to Michael Nicollas, Starlink's vice president, commented in a post on X, “The issue was due to failure of key internal software services that operate the core network.“ He further shared in a post, “Starlink has recovered from the network outage that lasted for approximately 2.5 hours.”
This was a significant disruption ever since Spacelink gained buzz in the internet industry. The company is known for offering reliable satellite-based connectivity, but the network unexpectedly went offline, resulting in the loss of internet service for its users.
He further shared an apology note, stating that the company is committed to delivering a reliable network and that the team will find the root cause of the issue and ensure it doesn’t happen again.
What Does Elon Musk Say on the Starlink Outage?
The Founder and SpaceX CEO also wrote an apology on X, “Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will remedy the root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.” Starlink, a popular internet-based service serving more than 6 million customers globally, has been constantly focusing on scaling its network; however, this time, it faced a complete service disruption.
Starlink is also known for offering smooth service during emergencies and in low-connectivity areas via satellite links, despite facing downtime.
Doug Madory, director of internet analysis of Kentik, stated that the outages are rare in satellite broadband. Moreover, the Starlink outage stands as the longest since Starlink became a renowned internet service provider. The company has more than 8,000 satellites and operates a low-Earth orbit network suitable for military and emergency applications, as well as remote areas with limited connectivity.
Thoughts on Avoiding Global Outages
The Starlink outage certainly serves as a stark reminder to strengthen operational efficiency and prevent similar global outages. The company has now recovered from the blackout and is resuming its service to users worldwide. Moreover, we would further put in place appropriate measures to avoid such outages in the future.
